For this week’s episode of our mixtape series, we invited the Paris-based producer Tryphème to record a mix for us. As always, we asked what she’s been up to recently & to tell us a bit about the mix…

Considering the current situation, writing music is my strongest source of hope.

I took some time to work on a new live show (leaning towards ambient music) for the mixmag livestream series “electronic therapy” in paris last november. I had a lot of fun playing it, and I keep the hope that it will be possible to play it in front of some people soon.

And I’m already working on another live show, more physical, to make people dance maybe?

I was on a train, from St Claire Les Roches to Paris, when an electric pylon suddenly caught fire and fell on the trails, thus leaving us stuck there for 5 hours. I took advantage of the occasion to make that podcast, using ableton.

A whole palette of emotions is hidden inside this hour of music; some fear, hope, seduction, some pain, some joy… I passionately love when the voices guide me and tell me some stories, so I added all kinds of vocals to this podcast, in french, in English… Sometimes we can’t really understand what they are saying, which gives us some space for interpretation, reverie… I also selected a lot of music from french artists.

Up next…

To keep on writing music with all my heart !

A few releases on some Various are already on the way ( including a track with my duo Women In the Royal Court, another one for the forthcoming dj Sasha compilation LUZoSCURA…)

And right now I’m focused on a new live project with a friend, named Vampire Dub, which is a great source of pleasure for me.

This week on the FMB Mixtape Series, we welcome ishi vu, the Stockholm producer & co-founder of his own imprint Glum Trigger. First, we caught up with him to find out what he’s been up to lately…

Just tryna get through the gloomy everdark of the pissy nordic winter we get to live with here.

Perhaps it will be of no surprise that it was mixed and recorded at home, in absolute solitude. But the idea of the mix has been maturing, blooming, in my trusty pinkish head-goo for a few months, and I’ve been everywhere from the fjords to Stockholm this season, so I’m hoping it doesn’t feel immediately all-too isolated anyway.

To open up with a sense of communion and euphoria, bouncing voices — remembering open-airs — and then to descend into the muck of a dried-out frog pond. These are some of my top picks of everything I’ve come across the past year or so, plus some old faves, plus some unreleased… all in terms of club… I took the opportunity to exploit this mix as an episode of escapism, to a place of sore feet and blushing faces.

Up next…

My debut album LA LUZ — dropping in March! Thru our own creative space Glum Trigger and thru/on Different Recordings.

For the first episode of 2021, we welcome Closet Yi to our mixtape series. Based in South Korea’s capital of Seoul, the producer has making moves on the DJ circuit for a few years now, so we’re looking forward to hearing about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…

Apart from making dj mixes and listening again to Resident Advisor’s 2020’s Best Albums, I’ve been really into practicing my driving skills recently. I never had the time or will to drive when I used to have gigs and parties, but I thought this is the perfect time to practice my skills. It’s challenging but I’m having a lot of fun.

The mix was recorded at my little studio in Seoul, South Korea. It’s quite hard to get a noise-complaint-free room here in Seoul, but me and my studio mate Jesse You were lucky enough to find this place because it has a motorcycle shop on the first floor, which is even louder! I went through quite a lot of my hard drive and shelves because I wanted to take a look at what music I’ve bought through the past year. An hour seemed a bit short for all the tracks that I wanted to put in as a ‘byebye2020 hello 2021’ mix so I ended up mixing 27 tracks for 90mins.

I wanted to feature a lot of female producers that I look up to  this time, especially rRoxymore and India Jordan, and tried to deliver it in a cheerful and catchy way. Each of the tracks are so good, but there’s also an energy flow in the mix as a whole so I hope the listeners can feel it too.

Up next…

More driving lessons and some exciting new releases following that!

For the final episode of 2020, we invited Phoebe Valentine to contribute to the mix series. As always, we asked what she’s been up to recently and to tell us what the idea is behind the mix:

I live in Manchester and we’ve pretty much just been in lockdown since March. In the few weeks when things eased I played at the STEAM radio launch and also for Melodic DIstraction in Liverpool but I’ve mainly been at home.

In true lockdown style, my mix was recorded in my bedroom with two audio technicas, cdj 900s and a xone:43 mixer.

With lockdown I’ve been pretty out the loop with music. The idea behind this mix is rediscovering my library and lots of new bits. In the club, I like to play all over the place with lots of energy but at home I’ve been enjoying more melodic sounds and I think that’s come across in the mix.

Up next…

I’m feeling hopeful and planning parties with B.L.O.O.M. for next year…

Next up on the FMB Mixtape Series is a mix from London-based duo Kassian. As usual, we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the selection & what they’ve been up to recently…

We haven’t had many shows this year with everything going on so we’ve just been hitting the studio as hard as we can, thankfully it’s been a really productive year for us. We also just played our first live stream b2b with Oneman a few days ago which was jokes.

The mix was recorded at our studio, 38East in Hackney Wick using an XDJ RX2, it’s basically our second home.

We wanted to dig a little deeper for this mix and play some of our heavier big room tracks, so we’ve thrown in some breaks and techno that we’re into at the moment. We’ve got an EP coming out in the new year that’s a little heavier than our last releases, so we threw in a couple of those too.

Up next…

Our next EP is called ‘Crush’ and it’s out on Shall Not Fade in January, we’ve also got a couple more records planned and are working on our first album as well. We’re also preparing to launch our own label next year.
