This week on the FMB mixtape series we welcome 808 State for a special Toyko edition of the series! As usual we asked if they could tell us a bit about the mix & what they’ve been up to recently…

808 State first visited Tokyo at the end of 1989 to promote, our then new album, “90″. Tokyo’s techno scene was fairly embryonic at that point. However, Tokyo was always a “Techno City” to us, because it was the home of our synthesiser family, “Roland”. A delegation from Roland Corporation came to meet us at our first gig in Club Quattro, on top of a department store. They gave us cassette of cover versions of our music made by Roland staff in their lunch hour – such a sweet and honourable present!

On our third trip to Tokyo we were now playing “On Air”, a large club in Shibuya. We were very honoured to receive Japanese music legend, Haruomi Hosono, as a guest at our concert. He was announced as being on the balcony and the whole audience turned around and bowed. Hosono was respected as a great artist in Japanese music, not only as a founder member of The Yellow Magic Orchestra, but also for his amazingly forward thinking back catalogue. Yellow Magic Orchestra are sometimes poorly described as “Japan’s Kraftwerk”. The fact is, they had been making equally pioneering electronic music at the same time. Take Sakamoto’s “Riot in Lagos”, featured here in this mix. It’s incredible to think this was made in 1980, and remains as playable today as it always was.

808 State have been honoured to remix several YMO related projects. Light in Darkness (808 Mix), is from a 1992 remix project, working out of Fon Studios in Sheffield. LFO, The Orb and The Shamen all contributed. There were a couple of remixes on Hosono’s 1993 release, “Mental Sports Mixes”, but they’re not featured in this mix.

La Sang De Poete is one of my favourite remixes of “The Beatniks”, the 1994 side project of YMOs Yukihiro Takahashi. That package also included a mix by Aphex Twin and Bill Laswell. Our own Tokyo Tokyo is a bit of a love letter to the city that has been very welcoming to our music over 30 years.

Up next…

This week delivering the FMB mix we’ve got Kitt Proudfoot returning to the series. As usual we first caught up with him to hear what he’s been up to recently:

Mainly just torturing myself trying to make a DJ mix using only Ableton. We recently moved from Berlin back to Margate, UK so our life is in boxes.

I am usually completely against Ableton mixes. Not because of Ableton itself (which I love for making bangers) but because I find it near impossible to get any sort of flow going. I eventually got there with this one. It happened when I started adding in acapellas and editing things on the fly. I am basically Richie Hawtin.

I would say this is me trying to be a little more peak time. When recording or programming a mix, if left to my own devices and with no crowd present, I would happily chug along at a very slow bpm. So this is a little more energetic. For me at least.

There is also a little bit of a thread in the tunes. A nostalgic idea of Ibiza mixed with a more no-nonsense style from my last four years in Berlin. I estimate that my DJing has become 10% more no-nonsense since living there.

I was also thinking a lot about the Gerard Butler revenge thriller, Law Abiding Citizen, at the time so naturally, that started making its way into everything.

Up next…

Once I have recovered from the experience of trying to make a DJ mix using only Ableton I will be releasing my next single and my new EP on 4DG records under my DAMERCY alias.  After that I will be making more comedy and tunes.

This week, fellow Belfast local Marion Hawkes brings us the final FMB guest mix of the decade! As usual, we asked her to tell us a bit about the mix & what she’s been up to…

I’ve had a run of really fun gigs including Breezeblock with Midland & Danielle,  Cabal in Galway and my own night LGBTQ Ponyhawke kicking up a notch here. In between all that i do a few shifts at a local record store.

The mix was recorded in my small home studio in Belfast on CDJ 900s & Allen & Heath 23C. Does the job.

While my roots are firmly in house music I’ve been delving into breaks, bass & intricate techno sounds a lot recently, so my sets the past while have been headed that direction, the same goes for this mix.

Up next…

I’ve a busy holiday period coming up, Boxing Night with Bicep & Horse Meat Disco for the Italo party at Ulster Hall which should be a hell of a lot of fun, same night I’m on support at Breezeblock who host Paranoid London & Violet. NYE with the Night Institute guys & Ponyhawke.

January is quiet so far then over to Liverpool in Feb on support for Eclair Fifi.

For this week’s episode of our mixtape series, we invited Waterford native Cailín to contribute. The DJ and producer is a longtime resident for stalwart techno collective Subject, along with Dublin clubs District 8 and Index. As usual, we asked a bit about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

I’ve been playing lots of really cool gigs – Dockyard Festival at ADE, New Faces at Tresor, Buttons at About Blank, Bossa Nova Civic Club in New York as well as lots of gigs on the Irish circuit, including my first Boiler Room at Higher Vision.

The mix was recorded using 2 Technics 1210 MkIIs and an Allen & Heath Xone 62 at my home studio just outside Waterford City.

When I record a mix I like it to have a beginning, middle and an end. I did that with this mix using records that are making me smile at the moment.

Up next…

After my gig in Kilkenny this Saturday I have 2 weeks free to chill and make tunes before I share the stage with my biggest techno idol and influence Dave Clarke at Index December 20th. I have 3 other really nice gigs between then and the New Year which haven’t been announced yet so keep an eye out.

For this week’s mix, we have Philou Louzolo returning to the series. Philou is a DJ and producer hailing from The Netherlands with roots in Nigeria, who has recently returned after some time off from touring and has started up his own imprint, Wokoundou. As always, we asked Philou to tell us about the mix and what he’s been up to recently…

This fall I released the very first EP on my own label Wokoundou. This EP was created during my half year break from touring in 2018 and it feels good to finally release it exactly one year later.

This year has been very symbolic, since my label’s first release was also round the same time my daughter was born.

Currently I am making making a lot of new music to continue with the upbringing of my label. I still produce most of my music at home with my basic set up: mac book + Akai LPK 25.

The mix was recorded in my living room, with CDJ’s + DJM.

This mix includes some released and unreleased Wokoundou music, some music from both my friends and legends such as Jeff Mills and Robert Hood and some Afro House favorites, including Enoo Napa and DJ LAG (QGOM).

Up next…

I have a few of bookings to go until the closing of this year but I will mainly prepare myself for 2020. Running a label takes a lot of time, I clearly underestimated that!

There is a lot of music ready to be released on Wokoundou, putting the EP’s together will be a challenge. I want to reach out to a diverse audience with Wokoundou; from Techno to Afro House and everything that touches me in between.

Wokoundou stands for a diverse, futuristic ‘black’ sound, I am inspired by old Detroit Techno legends but also by modern day Afro sounds from South Africa and West Africa, a mix between those genres form the roots of my sound. When it comes to my artistic expressions – I like order and structure. Combining different styles in a set is easier for me than blending them into an EP! But I look forward to take on this challenge.
