For episode 93 of our Feel My Bicep podcast series, we’re stoked to welcome Cormac, who recently played with us at our FMB event in Belfast & has become a regular guest at Panorama Bar since leaving the WYS! Sunday night parties at fabric. We caught up with him to find out what he’s up to at the minute and a bit about the mix…

Recently I’ve taken a step back from production and am concentrating on DJ gigs, I’m really enjoying it.

I’m on holiday in Mexico for a few weeks, so I recorded much of my record bag back to WAV before coming here. I’ve arranged things in Ableton mostly which isn’t my usual way to record. Usually, I record at home on my decks. 

Track selection is first and foremost, I have to share what I’m excited by. How they are arranged is a close second. as I recorded in Ableton I was a bit concerned that things become too linear sounding, too clean.. so some mixes, arrangement are quite dynamic. listening back, the selection I guess is a bit of a nod to electro, and personally, i can’t go in that direction without some connection to something Italo sounding, so that vibe is there also.

Travelling around Mexico for another week and then back to gigs. already looking forward to Blitz Club in Munich , Disco Zwei in Mannheim, Ankali in Prague and then back to Panorama Bar in April .

This week we welcome to the decks the Leipzig and Berlin based producer Martin Enke aka Lake People. As usual, we caught up with him to ask a few questions about the mix and see what he’s been up to…

This mix was recorded in my studio, with my usual Live Setup, plus two analog synthesizers (Juno106, Prophet 600)
recorded in Ableton Live.

It has a lot of tracks from my latest album, which was released on Mule Musiq in June 2017. I liked the idea to create a club orientated dramaturgy with almost the same tracks. The tracks itself have a different dramaturgy, as well. More energetic I feel.

I’m spending a lot of time in the studio right now and I’m about to finalize 3 new EPs through 3 different aliases. Of course a new Lake People EP, but also a new Llewellyn (www.facebook.com/llewellyn.music) on Riotvan and my debut EP under a brand new project called ‘Amrint Keen’ (www.facebook.com/amrintkeen). It just got released on Uncanny Valley 3 days ago. It feels great to finally make the step to be able to channel all my output. 

Lake People might get deeper again in the future. 

Llewellyn is more House, Disco, Wave.

Amrint Keen is gonna be more raw, broken and experimental.

For the first 2018 issue of our mix series, we invited Amsterdam based Nachtbraker (aka ‘night hawk’ in Dutch!) for a sample of his tunes. Dig in & check out what he’s been up to recently…

Been touring a lot in Europe, and recently had my third Asia tour, which was amazing! Also still really happy with the EP I released in september last year. My collaboration with San Proper on one of the tunes is doing really well, and its nice to see people picking up on that.

This mix was recorded at Void Club in Bordeaux, France, 1st of December 2017. It was at a party from Electrocorp who invited me a while ago to play for them. They’re good friends, and the vibe that night was wicked. I used two CDJ2000’s, 2 Technics SL 1210’s and an Allen & Heath Xone:92 mixer. The mix was recorded on DAT tape. I picked the middle 1,5 hour of a total 2.5 hour set.

Its a live recording of my gig in Bordeaux. I was playing till close and the vibe was on fire from beginning till end. I like this recording a lot because I got to play a variety of tunes, and the people really followed my lead in there. Going from some minimal house to electro breakbeats, deep flowing house to an old Joris Voorn tune and somewhat more raw tunes.

I’ve been working hard on finishing a new EP which is due early march on my own label Quartet Series. Finished a couple of forthcoming remixes on Heist, Dirt Crew and for a Dutch brass band. A tune on a vinly only sampler for finish label Common Labour is also coming in February.

Got some nice gigs coming up, playing DGTL opening night alongside my all time heroes Floating Points and Theo Parrish for instance. Also finally get to play with Jeremy Underground at Claire Amsterdam. Planning a new Latin America tour soon as well.

Pumped to have Lo Shea delivering this week’s mixtape, which he recorded live at Hope Works last month. As usual we caught up with him to see what he’s been up to:

I’ve been finishing the biggest year of my life. I got married, started a new Music/Art/Technology Festival in Sheffield called No Bounds , I’ve had the biggest year to date at Hope Works and the biggest show with Bicep (Live) which was a total joy. I’ve also been booking Q1+2 lineups at Hope Works while also getting into the studio to write some more material for a couple of labels that will come out early 2018. Yes, its been a busy time

The mix was recorded on 27.10.17 live at Hope Works. On a mixer, 2 CDJ2000’s and 2 technics. This was my warm up set for Bicep’s Live show. I started at just after 12 midnight and when this mix ends…Bicep went on and delivered a superb live show. It was a very special night I can tell you.

As a resident I always want to be responsive to the headline artists I book while also giving something of myself and my take on what’s interesting to me at that moment to do the particular job at hand. As a warm up set I really like to set a scene and move through tempos and textures to build an energy ready for the headliner to come on. I wanted to express a sense of melody as well as explore rhythmic and sonic experimentalism, but in a way that builds expectation and energy consistently with a few unexpected detours on the way. Having a few surprises always works for me.

Up Next…

Next I’m having some more time in the studio to write and explore some ideas I’ve been gestating. I’ve spent a lot of this year just listening, I’ve not actually written much, I’ve been on input mode. I’m flipping to output mode again as I feel I’ve something to say again after this rewarding process.

Then I go to China for a Mini dj tour from December 12th -18th – back in time for Christmas and family time!

Over the holiday period I’ll be starting to plan No Bounds 2018 in earnest then I’ll take a week off in January to go on holiday with my wife relax for a bit and recharge before I launch head first into 2018. I’ve already got 5 dates on the new Dusky European Tour and there’s more coming in as I write this. There’s so much potential to develop myself, Hope Works and No Bounds Festival, I just want to enjoy every moment as I walk this path.
