FMB MIXTAPE 71 | SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER

sdc

Local Belfast lad and Braveheart aficionado Jack Hamill aka Space Dimension Controller is delivering the FMB mixtape this week. Check out his new EP on R&S which came out last week. As usual we had a chat with him to see what he’s been up to:

“Been working hard in the studio on music and released EXOSTACK on R&S Records. Not released on that label in years so it was nice to do something with them again. Been reworking my live set around some ideas I had about the release so thats been fun too.

Recorded the mix pretty much in one evening at my studio! Mix between vinyl and Ableton.

Wanted to do something natural and with an acidic pulse so it took me a while to go back through my records. Really difficult to remember all these tracks so it took a while.”

Up next…

“Japan, Australia and I’m building an immersive cinema screen in Rye Wax as part of the London launch for the new 12″. You will be able to watch the video in the tiny private screen at the end of March + I have Renaat (owner of R&S) doing the a talk + ill also perform live.”

FMB MIXTAPE 70 | HOLLY LESTER

holly

For another instalment in our mix series, we’ve invited fellow countrywoman Holly Lester in for a sample of her sounds. If you’re not familiar with Holly, now is the time. She’s a regular behind the control at Belfast’s Shine, Manchester’s Warehouse Project and at our own FMB events, as well as previously being a resident at Liverpool’s Chibuku and Ibiza’s Sankey’s. She’s clued up (and cued up!) on what’s what in the vast sphere of music, effortlessly blending grooves that take strands of influence from Chicago and New York roots among others. We’ll be sure to catch her DJing in person at AVA Festival in June, but in the meantime, this mix will fill the gap from now until then. Take it away, Holly…

“The start of this year has mainly involved taking some time out and working on my own productions. I have been living a bit of a hermit life since winter ended in order to improve! Winter was super busy – I had a lot of cool gigs including two great Warehouse Project shows – so it’s kind of nice to have some time dedicated to music. Apart from that, I have just recently become involved with an initiative to get high school kids into DJing, called “Future DJs”. It’s a really cool concept and it’s great that the next generation have more opportunities to learn production/DJing at a younger age.

The mix was recorded on four CDJ2000 Nexus 2’s and an DJM900 Nexus 2 mixer in my friend’s studio in Knutsford. It’s a really picturesque little town in Cheshire not far from Manchester. I don’t have a big home setup in my apartment due to space/noise issues so I tend to go there quite a lot. The guys who own it run a label called Danse Club and are great producers. They have a load of good hardware and equipment lying around and were nice enough to let me use it for this mix.

I always really enjoy putting mixes together, I get to play some tracks that people wouldn’t necessarily hear me play in a club. I think it’s important to always have a kind of “journey” with a mix, something that really builds and flows – which is what I hope I have done for this one. My sets and mixes tend to feature a lot of tracks with a certain oldskool kind of feel to it, whether it’s more stripped back, deep or even a little breaksy. There is a heavy Chicago influence for sure. I always have this thought in the back of my head that it needs to sound timeless so that it will still be listenable in a few years. I am aiming to do that with my own productions as well. I am not so interested in playing what might be on trend these days as I did enough of that in my younger years of DJing! Fads will always come and go. Perhaps that is why I lean more towards a classic sounding style. I’ve done a couple of my own edits specially for this mix and even included one of my own recently finished tracks near the end.

The focus for this year is to create good music and, fingers crossed, pretty soon I will be ready to release some of it. I am a bit of a perfectionist so I don’t want to rush into anything. Aside from that, I am looking forward to a trip to Miami next month – my first time in America! Planning to check out WMC, see my best friend who lives in Florida, and I also potentially have a gig lined up there too so it will be a busy trip. I have a lot of gigs coming up in Ireland (North and South) over the coming months and am very excited to play AVA Festival in June – I had an amazing time there last year. This weekend I will be heading back over to Ireland to headline a party in Trinity, Downpatrick, which should be good fun!”

FMB MIXTAPE 69 | LONE

Lone

This time around we’re stoked to welcome Matt Cutler aka Lone onto our mix series. The head honcho of MagicWire, Matt has also released his music since 2007 on seminal labels like R&S Records, Werk Discs, Beat Records and more. Over the years, he’s crafted and grafted to earn his following, and this mix helps to illustrate why his success is so far-reaching. As you dive in, have a read below to find out what has been taking up his time recently.

“Been solidly wrapping up tracks for release this year. Ended up ditching about 5 months worth of material and made an EP in just under a week, so there’s tons of stuff knocking around at the moment!

The mix was recorded in my front room in Hackney on the cdj’s + a few records.

I wanted to capture a snapshot of being at home and listening to tunes with friends, nothing too calculated and overly thought out, hopefully capturing a vibe and showcasing what I’m collecting / listening to / making at the moment – there’s a couple of new unreleased things from me thrown in for good measure.”

Up next…

“Preparing releases, DJing, doing live shows – the usual really :)”

FMB MIXTAPE 68 | MAGNIER (THE HOUSE OF DISCO)

HOD

Delighted to have Magnier  from The House Of Disco delivering this week’s FMB mixtape. The guys have been running a blog, a label and a series of events in London for over 5 years, the next one coming up is next week with Hammer. As usual we caught up wit him to see what he’s been up to:

“I’ve just moved to Amsterdam from London after 8 years there so between that and running all the House of Disco stuff it’s been pretty hectic, the good kind of hectic though. I also have another anonymous label (ohhhh mysterious) that I run with a friend and have been playing lots of gigs around Europe, so getting to meet/work with so many great people which all which adds to the fun.

I haven’t got a proper setup in Amsterdam yet, I’m one turntable short at the moment, and seeing as I was travelling in Sri Lanka over the holidays I decided to dust off my copy of Ableton for recording this mix and do it on the go. As I mostly record mixes live with decks it was nice to revisit a different method. I forgot how much you can mess around with tracks & loops in Ableton and how much craic it is, such a time rabbit-hole.

As I run ‘House of Disco’ people tend to think of me as a disco dj only, which really isn’t true. For this mix I wanted to indulge my love of Science Fiction, I daydream about space all the time and I wanted to put together something to get your mind wandering but that’s also got a bit of an energy to it. I also didn’t want the pace to be too frantic, that’s not very conducive to daydreaming. I left a lot of the tracks quite long so you get the full journey.

Next up I have gigs in Amsterdam, Beirut & Istanbul and London where I’m playing with Hammer as part of the new series of House of Disco parties. Next release on the label is an EP from Aroop Roy and then another EP from Harry Wolfman shortly afterwards. Apart from that I’m just gonna keep putting out & playing out music I love and hope that it keeps me smiling and people dancing.”

FMB MIXTAPE 67 | TIMMY STEWART

TS

Belfast local hero and Extended Play head honcho Timmy Stewart has delivered a killer mix packed with both his own material under different guises and other great tracks past, present and future. The Belfast electronic music community owes a lot to this guy so get your ears round the mix without delay.  We had a chat with him to hear what he’s been up to:

“I’ve been kind of flat out of late, I jacked my day job in when we started the weekly night institute parties and haven’t looked back. This has meant constant juggling of the promotion involved there with having a young family, running our label and getting into my studio quite a bit more too. I’ve three new production projects coming this year, a couple feature in the mix.

The mix was recorded in my man cave during the day when my son was in school and my little girl was napping. This one was done in ablefriend, as I could rip bits of vinyl and tackle in stages, (naps don’t last that long unfortunately). I usually have to barricade the door with a flight case in the evening if I want to be completely uninterrupted.

It’s a bit of everything I love in interesting electronic music, the aim was to squeeze loads of influences in but retaining a flow and not just being a load of brand new music. Vintage, new, edited & unreleased bits all in there!”

Up next…

“Presently in the middle of locking down the bookings at the club & starting to take the night on the road. JMX and I have just sketched out the first half of the year’s singles on Extended Play which includes an album project from Batara & myself. Releasing the first edits from the Black Bones project and launching a new live act with a local artist and friend Neil Kerr called Mount Palomar. Trying not to kill my kids. :/”
