Delighted to have Magnier  from The House Of Disco delivering this week’s FMB mixtape. The guys have been running a blog, a label and a series of events in London for over 5 years, the next one coming up is next week with Hammer. As usual we caught up wit him to see what he’s been up to:

“I’ve just moved to Amsterdam from London after 8 years there so between that and running all the House of Disco stuff it’s been pretty hectic, the good kind of hectic though. I also have another anonymous label (ohhhh mysterious) that I run with a friend and have been playing lots of gigs around Europe, so getting to meet/work with so many great people which all which adds to the fun.

I haven’t got a proper setup in Amsterdam yet, I’m one turntable short at the moment, and seeing as I was travelling in Sri Lanka over the holidays I decided to dust off my copy of Ableton for recording this mix and do it on the go. As I mostly record mixes live with decks it was nice to revisit a different method. I forgot how much you can mess around with tracks & loops in Ableton and how much craic it is, such a time rabbit-hole.

As I run ‘House of Disco’ people tend to think of me as a disco dj only, which really isn’t true. For this mix I wanted to indulge my love of Science Fiction, I daydream about space all the time and I wanted to put together something to get your mind wandering but that’s also got a bit of an energy to it. I also didn’t want the pace to be too frantic, that’s not very conducive to daydreaming. I left a lot of the tracks quite long so you get the full journey.

 Next up I have gigs in Amsterdam, Beirut & Istanbul and London where I’m playing with Hammer as part of the new series of House of Disco parties. Next release on the label is an EP from Aroop Roy and then another EP from Harry Wolfman shortly afterwards. Apart from that I’m just gonna keep putting out & playing out music I love and hope that it keeps me smiling and people dancing.”

FMB MIXTAPE 67 | TIMMY STEWART

Belfast local hero and Extended Play head honcho Timmy Stewart has delivered a killer mix packed with both his own material under different guises and other great tracks past, present and future. The Belfast electronic music community owes a lot to this guy so get your ears round the mix without delay.  We had a chat with him to hear what he’s been up to:

“I’ve been kind of flat out of late, I jacked my day job in when we started the weekly night institute parties and haven’t looked back. This has meant constant juggling of the promotion involved there with having a young family, running our label and getting into my studio quite a bit more too. I’ve three new production projects coming this year, a couple feature in the mix.

The mix was recorded in my man cave during the day when my son was in school and my little girl was napping. This one was done in ablefriend, as I could rip bits of vinyl and tackle in stages, (naps don’t last that long unfortunately). I usually have to barricade the door with a flight case in the evening if I want to be completely uninterrupted.

It’s a bit of everything I love in interesting electronic music, the aim was to squeeze loads of influences in but retaining a flow and not just being a load of brand new music. Vintage, new, edited & unreleased bits all in there!”

Up next…

“Presently in the middle of locking down the bookings at the club & starting to take the night on the road. JMX and I have just sketched out the first half of the year’s singles on Extended Play which includes an album project from Batara & myself. Releasing the first edits from the Black Bones project and launching a new live act with a local artist and friend Neil Kerr called Mount Palomar. Trying not to kill my kids. :/”

FMB MIXTAPE 66 | SUGARHOUSE RECORDS

This week delivering the FMB mix we’ve got the Sugarhouse Records guys: Maurice, Roy, Seb and Jamie who run the label out of Sugarhouse Studios in Bermondsey. As usual we caught up with them tho hear what they’ve been up to recently:  

“We recently moved our studio from Stratford to Bermondsey, so we’ve been settling into our new place and getting down to business on some new tracks. We’ve been giving ourselves RSI by stamping up the second release on Bouncin, our edits sub label, which is out this month . We’ve also been doing DJ sets here and there, as well as fulfilling our residency at a bi-monthly party called Paradise Loft.

Two of the label co-founders, Jamie Paul and Maurice Jnr, recorded the mix in Jamie’s living room one rainy Saturday afternoon. We used two 1210s, a Pioneer Mixer and a stack of records.

Our DJ sets can be quite eclectic but, for this mix, we wanted to play some of the house records we’ve been enjoying most over the past few months, as well as showcasing some upcoming Sugarhouse bits.

After BOUNCIN002 (Maurice Jnr / Roy Rozell – Interlude / This Girl), we’ll be releasing SUGAR003 into the world – the new EP from Maurice Jnr & Seb Miguel. We’re hoping 2017 will be a busy year for us with new releases from the crew on Sugarhouse and other labels. We’re also on the lookout for some new artists to bolster the Sugarhouse roster.”

FMB MIXTAPE 65 | BRASSICA

What better way to round off the year with a podcast from Brassica. His Time Tunnel Ep is out on FMB now and his live show at our Warehouse Project event was a highlight. We are looking forward to hosting him at Shine on Boxing Night as well as making more plans for 2017. Here he is telling us what he’s been up to:

“Picking magic mushrooms in the Kent countryside, eating them, freaking out. Producing various kinds of music, mastering and mixing for other people and trying to get better at writing club music for my own amusement. Endlessly trying to perfect the Brassica live set. Learning the art of DJing for the last year or so. I’m a little late to the game but I’m enjoying the break from just production all day and I’m getting better all the time. I’ve been putting on some small club nights in my hometown of Folkestone, so I’ve been getting a fair bit of practice. Big up Bank Bar.     

I don’t own decks right now, so I recorded the mix roughly in Ableton with a MIDI controller and then tidied a bit afterwards. Recorded in my living room with my cat Benson onlooking.  

If the universe ever grants me the opportunity to be a full-time DJ, I’d play this kinda shit. It’s also where I’m aiming to take my productions too. I was mostly freeballing and having fun. Fun is becoming my main objective for music.”

FMB MIXTAPE 64 | WILL LISTER

We have been opening many of our dj sets with Will Lister’s track “Agency” which came out on Phonica Records this year. It felt natural we ask him to contribute to the mix series and see what he’s been up to.

“I’ve been doing a lot of uni work at the moment and haven’t had much of a chance to properly get into writing more music. But i’ve started using the Secretsundaze studios in London Fields which is sick because I can spend a full day there working on music and forget about uni for a bit. It tends to be that i’ll work on a few older tunes then when i’m in the swing of things have a go at writing something new. It’s nice to get out of SE London too for a bit every now and then. Everything I do is based around New Cross or Peckham really, so going and sitting on the train for 30 minutes then walking to the studio is a nice way of clearing my head before I start working on music. It helps my mentality of keeping things fresh. 

The mix was recorded at the Docks Studios in Dalston which is a great little spot. I was first introduced to the space, and to David who runs it, through doing a mix there with Fed (Axe On Wax). It’s got a great little vibe to it including a wicked system and a couple of nice outboard bits to record a mix through. David is a super nice guy and it’s a nice environment to get things done in.

I wanted to sort of summarise what i’d play in a 3-4 hour set in an hour but also without trying to over complicate it and keeping a natural flow. My sets tend to be pretty varied depending on how i’m feeling and when i’m playing, so it’s hard to show that off in a 1 hour mix, but I wanted to get a bit more dancy in this. My residency on Balamii let’s me play my more mellow tunes but I tend to save a certain vibes of tracks for the clubs so people don’t know what to expect (in a good way I hope). It’s a mix of records and digital as when I play out i’ll take a bag of records and a USB with tunes i’ve selected beforehand with me and play to the vibe. This was done in a similar way, I went through and played for an hour and worked out what would work then came back and recorded it.”

Up next…

“I’m aiming to release a mini-LP, extended EP, whatever you want to call it, at some point. I’ve got quite a few tracks i’m sitting on which i’m wanting to release as a single body of work, with more of a flow to it, like a DJ set. I’m keen to keep it in this format to challenge myself to think about releasing music differently. It’s pretty easy to just release 1 or 2 tracks at a time and then forget about them but I want to set myself a goal and try and stick to it. And anyway, i’ve still got another year and a half at uni to go so i’ll see where i’m at after that’s finished. I’m working on some remixes too for a couple of labels too at the minute so will see where they end up. Hope you enjoy the mix and hopefully see you in the dance sometime soon.”
