FMB MIXTAPE 53 | REG NAYLOR

reg naylor

Happy that Jake aka Reg Naylor has given us a slice of this radio mix to add to our podcast series this week. We caught up with him to hear what he’s been up to.

“I’ve just had a run of really good shows recently, Hideout in July was insane then played motion bristol with Glasgow’s man of the moment Denis Sulta. Then a wicked show at the nest in Dalston ended up playing for an hour and a half longer because the headliner couldn’t be arsed turning up on time. not naming any names though obviously….. Then i had a gig in Newquay this Sunday which is possibly the furthest place away in the world ever to play to 5 people. But lucky i had Jackmaster for company so the ride was at least fun.

The mix was recorded in the studio of  Balamii radio in Peckham. part of my monthly show, you should check them guys out there doing wonderful things. Then I picked my favourite 75 mins (not an easy task so hope you like the selection)  because the original was too long It was recorded on 1210’s and cdj’s and a mixer pretty standard. it’s a one take wonder to. i’m a fan of them feel like you get “more energy” as Arnold would say.”

Up Next…

“Probably freshening Andy’s fade. Not got many gigs in for a few weeks really. so if anyone wants to change that hit me up. Anyway it’s a real privilege to have been asked to be part of one  my favourite podcast series. Hope you all enjoy.”

FMB MIXTAPE 52 | 214

214

Excited to have 214 aka Chris Roman delivering this week’s mixtape. This mix was recorded live at a recent festival he played and it’s a all-hardware set! Also make sure to check out 214’s latest release ‘Fuel Cells‘ which just came out on Sheffield label Central Processing Unit.  As usual we caught up with him to see what he’s been up to…

“In June I released my follow up for Shipwreck.  It’s part of their singled sided disc series.  An EP titled “I See What You Did There”.  And in July I released an EP on CPU records titled Fuel Cells which Resident Advisor picked up for review

I’ve also just done a mix for Danny Daze’s Sunday Morning series which aired 2 weeks ago.  It’s a bit different from what I usually play.

I just got back from debuting a new hardware set at a lovely festival in Missoula, Montana called DAT.  It’s become one of my favorite festivals in the states. It’s not very big, but it’s well curated and feels like a family affair.  I decided to use that set for this podcast instead of a mix since I’ve been focusing on playing live the last year.

I tend to create new tracks for each of my live sets.  That keeps things interesting and engaging for me as well as the audience.  The majority of the tracks just stay in the boxes or are never played again.  But some get arranged into tracks for possible release.  These were all brand new again and created just for this festival so we’ll see where they go.

I’ve got a couple more EPs coming after summer.  My next Frustrated Funk EP is out September 5th and it’s titled North Cascades.  Frustrated Funk is my home label and who I work with the most. This is my 4th release for them.   Klen, label boss, and I have a great relationship and it’s a honor to work with him and the label as I was a big fan before I joined.  It’s a very organic and natural process and he’s great at giving me feedback on where to take my tracks.  Then in October I’ll be releasing an EP with Irish label Lunar Disko who I’m also excited to debut with.

I’m also currently working on my next LP which will be on Dutch label Field Records, but that’s in the early stages and won’t be out till sometime next year.

On the gig front, I’m working on taking more live sets on the road.  I love djing, but I’ve been focusing more on playing live.  Last year I debuted a new one at Berghain with your last podcast guests, London Modular.”

FMB MIXTAPE 51 | LONDON MODULAR ALLIANCE

london modular

Really happy to have synth shop owners London Modular Alliance providing this week’s mixtape. We loved their recent release ‘Wireless‘ on ARTRecords, which we also recently featured on the blog. As usual we caught up with them to see what they’ve been up to.

“Our first release as London Modular came out in June on ART and we’ve been working on new material. We’re perhaps seen as this live act that has no physical releases. But we’ve got a load of tracks which we will start to push out, A&R is just not our strong point!

This was recorded at our store, so I guess you could call it a studio mix. We used Ableton to lay down the tracks and added synced elements over the top from our modular systems. All the music is our own material.

We hoped this would be something people could listen to multiple times so we wanted it quite polished. This ruled out a full-on improvised set as these can often spiral into something experimental in a small space with no guidance from an audience.”

Up next…

“We’ve got a number of gigs lined up so there’ll be a fair bit of practice to prepare. We’re also in the process of finding a new premises for our shop. This will be a larger space that we plan to be more of a social hub, bringing in a small, independent cinema, bar, music studios and general event space.”

FMB MIXTAPE 50 | AUTOMATIC TASTY

AUTO TASTY

We are absolutely over the moon to have a contribution from Automatic Tasty for our podcast series. He’s part of the excellent Lunar Disko label having also released on Wrong Island Communications. He has really gone the extra mile with this mix and as usual we threw some questions about the mix as well as what he’s been up to..

“I’m not too sure really, not too much I don’t think. Reading mostly.

I made the mix at home on my computer over a period of weeks. I can’t mix records to save my life, I figure it best therefore to leave such dark arts to more adept practitioners. I opted instead to make a tapestry consisting of many different songs and snippets of television and radio noise along with some songs and poems etc.

This mix is about ‘dreaming while you’re awake’; it extends its hand in invitation to departure. I tried to create a little landscape of feeling and meaning, through which might be brought into sharper relief the experience of life in all its endless strangeness. I hope someone out there will find it useful, or moving.”

FMB MIXTAPE 49 | LOVEFINGERS

lovefingers

We’ve been friends and fans of Andrew for years, his legendary Lovefingers blog and podcast was an early source of inspiration for us. His ESP Institute label is one of the best places to find weird and wonderful forwarding thinking music, so we’re super happy to bring you a special mix from him!

As usual we had a chat with him to see what he’s been up to:

“Just back from New York City, Europe and Australia tours and have been super busy gearing up ESP Institute releases for Summer. Its been a very busy year for the label, been digging loads of new strange music from around the world, and theres been loads more raves in Los Angeles these days… time flies when you’re having fun.

This mix was recorded in the record room beneath my house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles… in the middle of the night.

I wanted to play some tough tunes that I don’t play out much and get premiere a few ESP Institute exclusives and tracks from friends as well. I feel its important as ever to keep pushing new and forward-thinking music, rather than always looking to the past, so I started off with an old leathery fave then worked through some contemporary material—drugged-out and oddball moment, then ending on an ethereal note as I usually like to do.”

Up next…

“Doing a small Westcoast stint in a camper van with my partner Heidi Lawden (who’s done an FMB podcast a while back) and old friend Tako from Red Light Records and his partner Izabel—should be a wicked trip! Then back to Europe for all of August. Oh and Japan next week. Slowly working on my EP that should be ready by end of the year.”
