FMB MIXTAPE 42 | RON BACARDI

Ron bacardi

Ron Bacardi (aka Ben Sims) came and saved the day, filling in for Omar Souleyman at our XOYO residency last Summer. It was a slamming set so we were excited for him to grace our podcast series. As usual we hit him up to find out what has been going on.

“Trying to get my head down in the studio, finish off some solo and collaborative projects plus a few remixes that should be out soonish.
Also, a nice mix of gigs lately, lots of new spots alongside old faves plus fun b2b sessions with Truncate and ROD. My first Ron Bacardi set of the year @ Claydrum in Holland went really well too, so definitely fired up for more.

The mix was recorded at my East London studio in February on 3 CDJ2000’s and a Pioneer 900 mixer.

It’s a mix of new and old, rough-edged raw house and mutant disco with some unreleased cuts and a few surprises.
It was done while digging out beats for my RB set in Maastricht so it’s essentially a one-take practice set and pretty much sums up what the project is about musically. Obviously there’s links to my techno sets (I was never going to be playing micro house) but it’s definitely got its own vibe going on and I’m about as pleased with it as a harsh self critic can be with one of his own mixes ;-)”

Up next..

“There’s quite a few Ron Bacardi sets coming up including some festival action and one at Concrete in Paris plus Kabuki returns to Dance Tunnel in Dalston with Rolando and me going b2b all night.
Machine celebrates its 5th year with a bunch of nice events as well as hosting an area at my favourite UK fest, the eclectic and pint sized, super friendly Field Manoeuvres.
My remixes for Shinedoe, Cassy and Luke Slater are all due out this half of the year, as is a new Ron Bacardi Hardgroove release. Plus, there’s some under the radar, labour of love projects like a hip hop mash up 7″ and some deep digging disco edits.”

FMB MIXTAPE 41 | KIM ANN FOXMAN

KAF

It’s an absolute pleasure to have Kim Ann Foxman supply us with a mix for our podcast series. She’s an ace selector and producer and we have great memories of her slamming it out at the Feel my Bicep room at Fabric’s birthday back in 2012!

We caught up with her to see what she’s been up to recently:

“I have just finished a new solo EP for release on Firehouse. + started a collaboration on a new project with two my two buddies in Brooklyn. We have a great single ready and are making an album.

This mix was  recorded at the Firehouse in Brooklyn in my home studio.  It’s a  mixture of old + new + unreleased stuff that i wanted to sneak in the mix as a preview. “

Up next…

“Just getting ready for a “busy beaver” summer really as usual!… and making more music for release on my label Firehouse,  and also some for other labels too.”

FMB MIXTAPE 40 | PIERS SOFT ROCKS

soft rocks

Another ESP Institute affiliate stepping up for our podcast series. Piers from this 4 way tag team of DJs from Brighton has delivered us a killer mix and we reached out to find out what he’s been up to:

“After a music-making hiatus of at least two years(!) trying to re-engage with production a bit. Doing a collaborative project with Toby Tobias plus Soft Rocks noodlings and some solo stuff. Starting my own record label – Mysticisms. Being a dad, playing the intermittent trickle of gigs that come in and falling in love.

The mix was recorded in one take in my front-room on 2 technics 1200s and my E&S DJR400 mixer. It was then lightly goosed in Logic – a bit of compression and limiting and I whacked on the new O’Flynn track as me got no CDJs. Out to Tom Blip for that!

I had planned to do a full-on, balls to the wall dancefloor mix but ended up dicking around with the records I mostly had on my living room floor. I tried to keep it a little more spontaneous and loose, moving between tempos

I also didn’t want to do anything overly balearic but I seemed to have contravened sections 4.2 and 4.8 of the EU jungle sound directive and also breached the global rainfall sound effect ban of 2009, so things might not have panned out quite as planned.”

FMB MIXTAPE 39 | PHIL SOUTH (GOLF CHANNEL)

philsouth

Golf Channel bossman Phil South has an uncanny knack uncovering and releasing  quality obscurities and finding new artist’s for his New York label.  Whether that’s 70’s psych or disco edit bombs. Make sure to check the new Africaine 808 album just about to drop. We caught up with the man to see what he’s been up to recently.

“You know, the usual. Oh and trying to open a country rave pizza bar with a wood oven and klipschorns and a place to watch the sunset over the mighty Delaware river while drinking a fine cocktail.

The mix was recorded in the basement, thats where it’s at! Some spacey deep techno, I like this meditative psychedelic music a lot.”

Up next..

“Cooking pizza and baking bread.”

FMB MIXTAPE 38 | GONNO

Gonno

We are over the moon to have our second Japanese selector of the year to contribute to our Feel My Bicep podcast series. This time its from Gonno who’s brilliant album last year on Endless Flight and killer EP on our favourite Ibiza label International Feel really caught our attention. Make sure you check out the beautiful “A Life With Clarinet” which Nick Hoppner finished off his FMB podcast with last year.  As usual we asked Gonno a few questions about the mix and what he’s been up to.

“DJing and making music as always, have been to Taipei last month to play at Korner club for the first time and it was awesome.

The mix has been recorded at Circus Tokyo last weekend, using 2 turntables and 2 CDJs. It was recorded from around 2 to 3am I think.

At the moment I only have one turntable with a nice phono-amplifier in my flat so I would rather do live-recording at the club than doing it in studio. Of course I didn’t select any track list in advance then, I picked it in response to the crowd. I do like the way that I can’t get away with any tricks for live audiences. I hope you will enjoy the vibe.”

Up next..

“Not confirmed yet but I might come back to Europe in the middle of this year.  My next release from Technique Tokyo as a new compilation – which I also added to this Feel My Bicep Mix – will be out in April I think.  Meanwhile, I was stuck in Nick Hoppner’s studio when I was in Berlin last year and we made some tracks together, so hopefully they will come out this year. And of course now I’m making loads of new stuff for next releases, please stay tuned!”
