FMB MIXTAPE 18 | GREG WILSON

greg

We’ve been big fans of Greg ever since the blog began, in fact ever since we started djing and listening to underground music. He was one of the first ever “high profile” djs who ever returned our emails, always sending us tonnes and tonnes of exclusive edits and content for our blog. He always went the extra mile which we always really respected. With that said, we’re absolutely over the moon to have Greg do a mix for our series ahead of his XOYO slot this weekend at our party.

We caught up with Greg to find out what he’s been up to:

“It’s been a relentless period, with a load of stuff happening in close proximity – US tour, Glastonbury, and the final Garden Festival in Croatia for starters. It’s been great to finally get a couple of weeks break from the DJ schedule, but there’s still no rest for the wicked, for amidst all this chaos didn’t I go launch my record label, Super Weird Substance! So I’m now in the process of releasing the first eight singles ahead of a compilation CD in November – planting the seeds we hope will bloom further down the line. We’re four into the series, so when I’m not DJing my time is either spent in the studio, or working on various aspects of the label.

The mix is a live recording from a Beach Festival I appeared at in Weston-Super-Mare in July. So there’s no idea as such, beyond entertaining the audience with good grooves on a sunny day. It’s obviously reflective of the music I’m associated with – classics, cult-classics and future classics – utilising a wealth of edits, reworks and remixes that DJ’s worldwide are thankfully sharing, so I’m able to draw from the past, but with an eye placed squarely on tomorrow. “

Coming up…

“Short term: Back in London on Saturday for Feel My Bicep at XOYO.

Medium term: Apart from the record releases, the label hosts a Super Weird Happening at the Estuary Stage at Festival No.6 in September. Apart from DJ’s and live performance, there’s also spoken word and live artists. We ran a series of Happenings last year as club events up and down the UK, but this is the first time we’ve curated a space at a festival. If you’re about it’s on the Saturday 9am – 9pm.

Long term: we reclaim the culture :) “

FMB MIXTAPE 17 | NICK HÖPPNER

podcast template-Recovered (1)

Absolutely over the moon to have Ostgut Ton’s Nick Höppner onboard for the next instalment in our mixtape series! We’ve been massive fans of Nick for years, having caught him many times at Panorama Bar! He’s turned in an absolute killer selection, one of our favourites from the series – ahead of playing at our XOYO residency this week. If you missed his beautiful debut album you can listen here.

We caught up with Nick to ask him how he went about the mix and what he’s up to next…

“I have been touring quite a lot, but am enjoying a fairly quiet summer at the moment, which allows me to go to the studio a lot where I’m working on my next EP for Ostgut Ton. I’ve also completed two new tracks which will come out on a split 12” with a well known English DJ and producer who’s starting his own label later this year.

The mix was recorded on the last Thursday afternoon in July in an empty Panorama Bar on CDJs, turntables and the new RANE MP-2015 mixer. It’s a snapshot of my djing of the past weeks and months. Almost all the tracks have been thoroughly road tested. It also showcases one of the forthcoming remixes of my album “Folk” on Ostgut Ton and contrary to what I’ve recently said in another interview, I am dropping that one hot tune of the moment!

Up next is a bit of holiday, more studio work and a busier djing schedule again this autumn taking me to North America, Asia and Australia amongst others.”

FMB MIXTAPE 16 | SISTERHOOD

sisterhood

After a killer TIEF takeover at our XOYO residency the Sisterhood boyz have knocked out a belter podcast for us! It perfectly showcases their tough and melodic sound! We spoke to them to hear what they’ve been up to…

“We’ve been recovering from the mud fest that was Secret Garden Party this week, as well as a few London shows recently we hopped aboard the Tief boat party at The Garden Festival and the almighty Gottwood, which is fast becoming a yearly tradition!

The mix was recorded on 2 Technics and a shoddy old Pioneer mixer in our living room. Keeping it simple. There isn’t a strong theme or idea really other then a selection of records we are both feeling at the moment, some old, some new. There is a bit of everything in there and it’s a pretty accurate representation of how our club sets sound.

We have a mini Swiss tour coming up with the whole crew, and our good friend and fellow Tief label cohort Manuel Fischer. Music wise, we’ve got a cheeky white label release in the works which you might’ve heard out and about, then it’s heads down in the studio for our next EP by the end of the year.”

FMB MIXTAPE 15 | ANDY BUCHAN

buchan

Buzzin’ to have our friend Andy Buchan onboard! As you may know from previous posts Andy is an old friend from out in Dubai and showed us lots of support when we first started out on the blog, so it’s an honour to have him step up and do a mix many years on!
Expect a super eclectic mix of party bangers. Here’s a few words from Andy himself:

“It’s been a busy month as I’ve got 4 tracks out at the moment – a nu-disco track on Dear Deer’s latest compilation, and also an acid nu-disco roller on Dubai’s first dance music album Ma’ana, out on Bootleg Social. I’ve also got a tech-house track out on Beirut’s VL Records, and my homage to Orbital (‘U&Me’) out on KZ Records. I’m also bringing my club night Loaded back in August – funnily enough, Matt used to DJ with me in Dubai at my disco/house night, and designed the first Loaded artwork! Loaded is a proper open-minded and fun indie night, everything from Jamie xx to The Jam, Jurassic 5 to Julio Bashmore.

It’s essentially a 3 hour set condensed into 75 minutes, but there’s hopefully still a nice flow to it, with some crate digging tunes and some serious dancefloor damagers. There’s a definite acid theme bubbling away throughout. I wanted a spread of BPMs and mix some classics amongst some newer tracks, and one of mine in ‘Sunspots.’

I’ve got a deep, broken beat house track coming out on BoxLogic in the near future, and I’m also working on a collaboration with Thrill from LA, who’s a rising US house star – he’s done the vocals over a proper old skool rave tune that’s seriously cheesy and fun. I’m also re-building my Soundcloud after they took it down for my 3rd strike – all 350,000 plus plays and 80 tracks, ouch. Back up now here if you want to keep up to date.

FMB MIXTAPE 14 | STUDIO 89

podcast

Buzzin’ to have our good friends David, Ben and Nick join us at XOYO, hosting their legendary Studio 89 party! Originally based in Cardiff they would put on nights to just under 100 people in a hand built wooden basement club with the likes of Prosumer doing magically all night long sets. The vibe was special, unbeatable infact and now they’ve relocated to London and expanded massively.

We caught up with Ben to ask him what’s been happening…

We had a stage at Gottwood last month which was great, then I played at Glasto a couple of times for the block 9 crew, then onto the annual trip to garden which never fails and just finished that. Other than that just being a total idiot as normal and going about my daily stalking of andy, sorry matt.

The mix was recorded at my home in Bristol, all vinyl and at about 2am in the morning. I had had a bottle of malbec and felt like a mix, put the recorder on and this happened. Its a combo of old proper deep house records i love, some new balearic stuff that has just come out and some classic italo records that i hold dear to my heart.

We have a very exciting summer/autumn with studio 89, we are hosting room 2 at the Bicep residency with Marcel Vogel on July 18th, then an exhibition at simple things festival in bristol in October where we will be exhibiting all the artwork from this year that we have created on large A1 acetate lightboxes, it’s all pop art themed and we are selling framed prints on our website. We are also hosting a stage there which we do every year with an amazing lineup of friends. On top of that we have 3 events in london, one at Dance Tunnel on Sept 4th and 2 at The Colombian where we do most of our events and a couple of other bits and bobs here and there aswell.
