This week we have the Canadian-duo Junior Boys on the FMB Mixtape series, who recently released their first album in six years, ‘Waiting Game‘. You know the drill, we asked more about the mix and what they’ve been up to recently…

I have been rehearsing every day for a tour or USA and Canada that we are embarking on in a few days. It has been a lot of fun playing old and new Junior Boys stuff and getting the set together

I just recorded it in my studio with some DJ software nothing fancy.

It’s just a mix of some new techno stuff with some classic old Detroit stuff. kind of my bread and butter of dance music. I always gravitate to funkier minimal techno. I tend to like the stuff that has a relentless groove and not a ton of reverb and stuff like that. I love guys like Rob Hood, Claude Young, Dan Bell etc that my wheel house. so anything new that takes me to that place I usually gravitate towards.

Up next…

going on tour, mixing records, eventually working on new music with Junior Boys and other projects.

For the first episode of 2023, we welcome Laurence McAulay aka Lárus – a London-based Glaswegian DJ, radio host and promoter of the Vicious Creatures party series. As always, we first caught up to hear about the mix & what he’s been up to lately…

My wife and I are currently travelling for 6 months and we’re in Bali at the moment after spending 6 weeks in Australia. I’ve managed to pick up a few gigs which has been decent. I played with Hysteric at his Mothball Records night and also at Revolver in Melbourne then played an all night set at Club 77 in Sydney which was very good fun. I also warmed up for Ivan Smagghe and Manfredas at Potato Head in Bali on New Years Day which was pretty cool.

The guys at Potato Head were kind enough to let me use their beautiful Headstream studio to record the mix since I didn’t get a chance to record it before we left London.

The mix I had originally planned is very different from then one I ended up recording. There’s been a massive shift in the scene over the last few years and almost everyone, including myself, is now playing much harder and faster than say 5 years ago. My initial plan was to sort of take a step back from that and I’d had a dig through my record collection and picked out a few seminal 90s House tunes from the likes of Boo Williams, Scott Grooves, Pal Joey, DJ Duke & Roy Davis Jr but unfortunately I didn’t get time to record that mix due to having to pack our flat up to come travelling. Instead I’ve put together a mix of some tunes I’ve been playing out a lot recently, very high energy stuff with lots of breaks, piano breakdowns and a particularly silly Speed Garage Remix of One More Time.

Up next…

Heading off to Thailand next week then over the next few months travelling through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Japan. Hoping to pick up a few more gigs while travelling too.

This week, for the 200th episode of our FMB Mixtape Series, we welcome Massimiliano Pagliara, the Italian-born Berlin-based DJ and producer. First, we caught up with him to find out what he’s been up to lately…

My new album “See You In Paradise” came out end of October on Permanent Vacation. So, I am touring a lot at the moment, celebrating my new baby with dear friends, worldwide. I have also been taking care of my label, Funnuvojere records. The last release just came out, a new EP by one of New York’s finest DJs/ producers, Eamon Harkin. In between all of this, I have been trying to work in the studio on some new tracks.

The mix was recorded at my place . With 2 CDJs and a Taula 4 Mixer.

I started this mix several times. Tried different directions. Normally, when I am asked to record a mix, which is mostly for home listening, I tend to prefer a non – clubby direction. People can hear me as a DJ all the time, right? But then in the end I thought, it’s the end of another special year so I will try and put together some of my favorite club hits from 2022. Which again, wasn’t an easy thing to do with the mix being around an hour long. It was of course impossible to include all of them! But I hope you can get the picture :)

Up next…

More touring, releasing more lovely music on Funnuvojere, finishing some new projects in the studio.

Next up on the FMB Mixtape series is a mix from Jordan Nocturne, the Belfast-based resident and promoter The Night Institute. As usual, we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the mix & what he’s been up to recently…

I’ve had a really busy year playing across Europe, in-between dropping releases on Permanent Vacation and Correspondant, plus remixing for Benjamin Frohlich and Cormac.

At home, our party The Night Institute celebrated seven years, and myself and Timmy Stewart are continuing to run our monthly at The Ballyhackamore Working Mens Club. It’s exactly what it says on the tin – an authentic social club with dirt cheap drinks, good people and great music.

I’ve also just relaunched my Nocturne label with a new EP from Alex Virgo, and we have upcoming releases from Perdu and Man Power over the coming months, where we’re continuing to collaborate with Andreea Ilisai on the art.

This mix was recorded at home on Ableton. I like to put a bit of planning into mixes, so unless it’s a live recording, Ableton’s always my go-to. I’ve just moved house, and this is the first mix I’ve done between these four walls actually.

This is an hour of straight up club energy – beatless, acid, electro, italo and trance all in there. It’s how I play at peak time. There’s music here from the likes of Red Axes, Joshua James, Pablo Bozzi & Bryan Kessler.

Up next…

I’m working on a lot of music at the moment. I’ve been working with some amazing vocalists, which is a new challenge for me. They’ll see the light of day at some stage in 2023; I’m taking my time to do it right. I have a special edit that is incoming on Cormac’s Polari label once we get the final thumbs up, plus I’ll be getting stuck into the festive raving season with our Boxing Night & NYE parties at The Night Institute.

For this week’s episode of the FMB mixtape series, we welcome Julienne Dessagne aka Fantastic Twins; the Berlin-based French artist, producer, live performer and label owner (Microdosing). As usual we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the mix & what she’s been up to recently:

Mainly traveling for my live shows and in between working in the studio on lots of exciting projects – a soundtrack for contemporary dance, adding the last touches to my album, finishing an EP, and a new collaboration with Andrei Rusu (1/2 of the Khidja duo)… amongst other things.

The mix was recorded in my studio in Berlin. My focus has always been on producing music and performing live shows rather than DJing so I have learnt to find my own way of making mixes which isn’t exactly the standard DJ approach. I use mainly Ableton and some outboard effect units. After selecting the music and digitalising vinyls when needed, I put the tracks in a session and do quite a lot of editing, add some layers of my own recorded material or vocals here and there, process some bits through external effects, etc. My mix is ultimately an instinctive assembling of all that and some happy accidents. The idea behind the mix is hopefully to create emotion for the listeners. I personally don’t enjoy mixes that sound like a straight motorway from start to finish. I much prefer to be taken through highs, lows and unexpected turns. I approach mixes in a very similar way to my live sets. For this particular mix, I liked the idea of starting things on what sounds like the fading end of something else. And building anew from there, in full circle.

Up next?

Some upcoming live shows this weekend in Paris, Prague, a Mexican tour in December, an endless list of projects to finish in the studio, and I’m also looking forward to diving into the visual / art direction research for my new album which will hopefully be released next year.
