Next up on the FMB Mixtape series is a mix from Berlin duo DJ Heartstring. As usual, we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the mix & what they’ve been up to recently…

In the past months touring has probably been the biggest part of our daily life. Even though it can be exhausting from time to time, playing all around Europe has been amazing. Apart from playing we have been using every chance we get to go to the studio to make music and process everything that has happened this year.

We recorded the mix at home. It is definitely a different feeling from playing at a club or a festival. But we still had a good time selecting tracks and making sure that we are happy with the result.

With this mix we wanted to showcase a different approach to our sound. We definitely play more Hardgroove and Tribal inspired music in this one, sprinkled with a healthy dose of unreleased material by us and our friends. The mix demonstrates pretty well what we sound like right now when we are playing – more ravey and more impulsive.

Up next…

We are further shaping our sound and trying out new things. We have so many tracks laying around that we cannot wait to release soon! We are currently setting up everything to give you new music as soon as possible. Keep an eye out for TEENAGE DREAMS.

This week on the FMB Mixtape Series, we welcome Nailah Hunter, the multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. As always, we first caught up with her to find out about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

First and foremost, I’ve been working on finishing my first LP! At the same time, I’ve been traveling and playing a ton of live shows. It can be a bit hectic all at once, but I’ve really enjoyed getting to know myself as a live performer. It’s exciting to craft new music with the best understanding of how I like to perform live in the back of my mind.

This mix was recorded in my home studio in Los Angeles, CA.

Recently, we had a record breaking heat wave in LA and it was brutal! It made me think a lot about global warming and how this is the hottest summer we’ve had yet, but they will only get hotter from here. Depressing to say the least! So, I drove all around the city that week seeking refuge from the reality of the weather. I jumped in friends’ pools in the hills, played in my favorite waterfall, waded in the shallows at a few different beaches in Malibu, and each time I made contact with the water I felt a new and particular sense of joy and gratitude for the experience. These songs capture that trouble-less, sunkissed, soaked in bliss sort of feeling for me.

Up next…

Wrapping up my album, collaborating with some amazing artists from all over the world, and trying my best to stay grounded and grateful in these absolutely bonkers times!

This week on the mix, we welcome Eagles & Butterflies – an electronic music producer from the UK. A vintage synth aficionado, he has worked with labels such as Running Back, Mute, Domino and his own imprint Art Imitating Life. As always, we first caught up to find out about the mix and what he’s been up to recently…

Hey Guys! Recently I’ve been working lots in the studio and touring a bunch. Had a busy year with music so far, and getting ready for my first release on Running Back. I used a really dope studio in LA called Synth Cabin by Rob Rosen and the gang and re-recorded a whole bunch for it on some killa synths like the Moog Modular, CS-80 and Oberhiem 8 voice.

I asked a bunch of producer friends I really like for some new music whilst touring and got an idea for the mix then recorded it when I got back to the studio.

The idea for the mix was just a feel good peak time mix full of melody, I wanted to try and incorporate all aspects of peak time I like to play; with inspiration from 80s, 90s, Italo and some darker bits also, with a classic or 2 thrown in !

Up next…

Up next is my first EP on Running Back coming in October which I’m really buzzing about, for sure my favourite label, also just finishing up some remixes for Bob Moses, RY X and a bunch others. There are also some remixes coming on my label from Jennifer Cardini, Chinaski and Hiver !

Tracklist:

1. Eversines – New Place
2. E&B – CS-80
3. Zombies in Miami – Forever
4. REES – Oslo Disko
5. Miljom – What Does it Take (Kornel Kovacs Remix)

FMB MIXTAPE 194 | MIDWEEK (320 DOWNLOAD)

For this week’s episode of the FMB mixtape series, we’re excited to invite MIDWEEK in the mix! Comprising of members Chaz Moloney and SHEE, the DJ and producer duo have been at the forefront of Limericks underground dance scene for the past 7 years. As usual we fired some questions over to them:

We’ve had some down time over July after a couple of hectic months leading up to the summer. July in Ireland always seems to be a quiet month so we’ve used that time to get into the studio and get to work on mixing down tracks from our forthcoming debut album. It’s been nice to be able to spend a few consecutive weeks in the studio as we’ve written some more new music which we are really happy with! We just  played AVA Belfast for the first time which was a great experience & it was nice to finally put faces to so many names we’ve heard about over the last few years. Life Festival, as always, was one of the highlights of our summer so far too! That was like a proper meet up for all the  heads in the Irish scene that havent seen eachother over the last couple of years so that was super fun also.

We recorded this mix in our studio in Limerick over a few glasses of wine on a hot summaaer evening. We used an extremely rallied pioneer controller to record the mix. This controller has been with us for nearly 10 years now from when we first started playing together and it has operated some really special free warehouse parties in Limerick over the years. So it has a special place in our hearts no matter how dodgy the pitch faders on it may be.

We wanted this to be a journey mix. The aim is for the listener to get lost within the bass heavy broken beats, to be brought home by the euphoric vocals and lush pads and get lost again straight away. A constant cycle of losing & finding oneself over the course of 70 minutes. We also wanted to represent our small country as much as possible and so we’ve included a few of our friends unreleased tracks, some tracks released on Irish record labels as well as a fair few of our own tracks from our upcoming album.

Up next…

At the moment we are trying to get our album finished up. The end is in sight. We started this album back in January. We rented a house down in Valentia Island for a week and set up a makeshift studio in the wilderness of the South West of Ireland. Since then we’ve been mixing down the tracks as well as writing a few more to be released with the final project. At the moment we are also trying our best to find a home for the album so most weeks we are spending a lot of time sending around demos to some of our favourite labels. In terms of gigs, we are really excited to host an album listening party at this year’s Feile Na Greine in Limerick as well as a 3 hour DJ set the following night. We are also playing Ireland’s favourite independent music festival Fuinneamh in September and we’ve a couple of more surprises to announce in the coming weeks.

Next up on the FMB Mixtape Series, we’re happy to have Mika Oki in the mix, a French-Japanese visual and sound artist, currently living and working in Brussels. First, we caught up with her to find out about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…

I’ve been chilling in my garden with my cat! Watching the supermoooon!

As a late night bird, I’ve recorded this mix during the night in my studio in Brussels. My studio is also a radio station once a week and turns into a community studio for the french & belgian LYL radio. I’m taking care of the Belgian branch. The studio is part of an artist runspace where I live together with nineteen other artists. It’s called Brasserie Atlas.

Usually I craft my mixes like a trip on acid by balancing many opposites. From organic sounds to melted voices, electroacoustic sounds and rugged drums, busy acid workouts and sparse, bass heavy rhythm tracks. This one is more progressive and made of cathartic passages of musical mindfulness with brutal drum assaults that tugs you in many different directions at once to trigger both physically and emotionally.

Up next…

Lately I’ve been Djing and playing an AVLive project with SKY H1.

Will be touring during the summer in festivals like Dour and Pukkelpop in Belgium, Dekmantel in Holland, Nextones &  Opera in Italy & others…

I’m also looking forward to being in September for the Meakusma Festival where I will be showing my Installation Parhelion and be in Uganda for the Nyege Nyege Festival where I will show a very new work for the occasion. Can’t wait!
