Up next on the FMB mixtape series is a mix from Giulia Tess, the Italian-born London-based DJ and producer. Giulia has emerged as one to watch in recent years, with standout releases on Ross From Friends’ Scarlet Tiger imprint, Fever AM, and More Time Records. As always, we first caught up to find out about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

Hey guys :)

I’ve been quite busy this past month, had a pretty mental weekend last week hopping around from Leeds to London to Varese back to back.

I’ve also been busy working on a couple of remixes – one of which is out today! It’s by the brilliant Art School Girlfriend and it’s called Good as I Wanted – it’s featured in the mix so listen out for it.

I recorded and post produced this mix in my tiny bedroom in Seven Sisters. I’m always on the look out for new tracks and spend a lot of my time collecting and hunting for tunes.. Some of them I had kept back for something special such as this so I’m really glad I can finally play them.

For this mix I wanted to be myself and play a bunch of tracks that inspire me. It was great because it essentially meant listening to songs that I really like for ages and having a play around with different possible combinations before recording.
It’s a mixture of techno and breaks and a true representation of what I’m playing at the moment in clubs. It’s raw but romantic, a piece in three parts – starts loud with a bite to it, goes quite dark with heavier sounds, then drifts into more romantic, introspective lines.

Up next…

I’ve got a few more gigs lined up as well as looking forward to festival season. It’ll be my first time playing at a camping festival in this country so I’m looking forward to that a lot! I’m also working on my next release and a couple of remixes that will be out later this year. I’m really gassed to be doing this mix – thank you so much for having me.

Next up on the FMB Mixtape Series is a mix from Pablo Bozzi, the Berlin-based Producer, DJ and label cofounder. As usual, we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the selection & what he’s been up to recently…

I’ve been playing quite a lot recently. I’m super happy to be able to play again in front of people, last months have been crazy gig wise and it feels so great!

I recorded the mix from my flat in Berlin, I have my studio there,  and I have a DJ setup with 3 CDJ, 2 technics and a Xone 92.

The mix is composed of tracks I enjoyed a lot playing recently, it also seems that nice weather is finally coming back, so I was in that kind of vibe, a mix to drink a fresh Spritz with your sunglasses on to warm you up for your next party.

Up next…

I have a new 6 tracks EP coming up on Pinkman on April 22, some new tracks are on the way with my friend Kendal for our project INFRAVISION.

And I have also have another EP coming up on my friend Phase Fatale label BITE before the summer , and we have an album coming later this year for our projected together, Soft Crash.

FMB MIXTAPE 185 | SHAUNA (iTUNES)

Joining us for this week’s episode of our FMB Mixtape series is Shauna, the DJ and Producer from Leeds. Shauna is a member of the SISU collective and she also has a number of residencies, including Liquid Orange on Steam Radio and No Photos On The Dancefloor on Alto Radio. As always, we first caught up with her to hear a bit about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

March has been so busy! I’ve been playing around Leeds a lot and working on the follow up to my first EP Original Workout, which will be out on Vief records at some point this year. I’m also currently in my second year of a PhD exploring the experiences of female DJs, so I’ve been finishing off the analysis of interviews I did last summer.

I recorded the mix on the Pioneer DDJ-400 controller in the bedroom of my flat in Leeds on a Sunday evening after work (love you Released Records). I only recently upgraded to the DDJ from the Numark Mixtrack Pro I bought second hand when I first started DJing 6 years ago, I thought doing this mix was a good enough reason to treat myself to some new decks!

With this mix I wanted to platform as many women, non-binary, trans and queer producers as possible. There are lots of incredible DJs/producers from marginalised backgrounds pushing the scene forward right now, but they often don’t get the recognition they deserve because dance music is still dominated by straight, cis white men. A lot of the producers I’ve featured are members of collectives attempting to change this narrative by educating and inspiring up-and-coming DJs of marginalised genders, such as SISU, BLVSH, Not Bad For A Girl, Shifting Spheres and The Beatriarchy.

Sound-wise, the mix is very eclectic. Transcending genre boundaries, it encompasses house, techno, breaks, electro, and club – I can’t stick to just one genre. It starts off relatively house-y and descends into peak-time warehouse rave vibes. It also ended up being v queer, which seems to happen with everything I do!

Up next…

I’ve got several releases coming up and loads of gigs in Leeds over the next couple of months. So far in April I’m playing at Transform festival, Freedom Mills supporting Culprate, and Belgrave opening for Planningtorock, who’s one of my favourite producers and a queer icon so I’m v excited! I’ve also got a few festivals booked over summer, inc. Holistic Missile in Wiltshire in August and Hidden Doors in June with SISU, which is a multi-disciplinary arts festival happening in the abandoned Old Royal High School in Edinburgh (Google it – it’s sick!).

For this week’s episode of the series, we’re happy to have SUCHI on the mix! The Oslo-born, London-bred, Delhi-influenced DJ and producer is based in Manchester, she hosts a monthly show on Boxout FM and is part of the South Asian collective Daytimers. As always, we first asked if she could tell us a bit about the mix and what she’s been up to recently…

I’ve been working on some music that is set to release later in the year. I’ve been taking it fairly easy so far, focusing on spending as much time in the studio before gigs start kicking off in spring. I moved to Manchester back in August, so I have been spending some time exploring the city too.

The mix was recorded in my apartment in Ancoats with a Pioneer DDJ-RB controller and Rekordbox. I’ve just been able to get my CDJ NXS2’s and mixer back to the UK after having to leave them in storage for almost two years in New York! I still haven’t set them up, so I had to record this mix on my tiny little (now discontinued) controller. This was the controller that got me into DJ’ing and holds a lot of sentimental value to me. So it felt nice to record a mix for a podcast I’ve been such a big fan of with the thing that opened a lot of musical doors for me.

I wanted to create a mix that showcased some really forward thinking South Asian producers that have caught my attention lately. Some are based in the UK, Pakistan and India and I find it so interesting to hear how their influences and environments affect their sounds. For example, I’m noticing that artists living in India and Pakistan are really pushing the envelope within electronic music and are churning out more experimental compositions, whereas artists in the UK are really finding that beautiful sweet-spot of sampling South Asian instruments or vocals and combining them with classic UK breaks and bass. There are also a few non South Asian artists in there who I love that have inspired a lot of the music I’ve been producing lately. The mix ranges from 111 BPM to 140 BPM and is packed with emotion and hard hitting percussion. Two things I’m very drawn to in my sound.

Up next…

I’ve got a few releases coming out in spring, one track that will feature on a very special compilation in March and a 2-track EP set to release in April. I’ve also got some really exciting shows lined up in the UK and Europe and we’re working on making my third India tour happen. Other than that, I’ll be spending time in the studio working on my third EP which will hopefully be released this autumn. So stay tuned :)

FMB MIXTAPE 183 | TOM VR (iTUNES)

This week on the FMB mixtape series we welcome Tom VR, the producer and co-founder of Valby Rotary. As always, we first asked what he’s been up to recently & to tell us a bit about the mix…

It’s the end of January and my new year new me phase has just about faded away at this point, so kinda doing my usual thing! Juggling my music life and work life as per, but also happy as I’m finally cycling loads again after an unfortunate bike theft in September.

I worked on the mix throughout December and January in my front room, on my amazing housemate Harry’s set up. I recorded loads of takes into Ableton and went with my favourite overall mix. I also used an FX delay unit throughout.

The whole mix takes place within a range of 130 – 140 BPM and is dancefloor focused. I wanted to keep it cohesive and go heavy in parts. Plenty of unreleased tunes from me and my friends, and also lots of bassy four-to-the-floor bits that I’m playing atm alongside some older music and a tinge of techno stuff.

Up next…

I’m finishing up a solo record for the end of the year, putting out a collab with Louf on Valby Rotary (which kicks off the mix), putting out some album remixes, and also I’ll be playing a bunch of gigs with friends of mine over the next few months!
